September kayaking in Montana is hard to beat. Missoula’s three major rivers offer wonderful late summer early Autumn options for leisurely paddles through cool early morning mists. A morning kayak excursion on the Clark Fork or Blackfoot River is a wonderful way to experience Montana, look for birds & wildlife, and reconnect to our amazing planet. No better means to relax than by following the path of the paddle. . The sun comes up a little later so it starts to warm up around 10am. Here are a few of our favorite paddles near Missoula.
Clark Fork River Kayaking: Tarkio Canyon: Our favorite. Thirty minutes from Missoula. About six miles and two relaxing hours on the river in a beautiful little canyon. A couple of small riffles and on big wave you can challenge or go around. Expect to see eagles, herons, osprey, kingfishers along the way.
The Blackfoot River Kayaking. Whittaker Bridge to Johnsrud. About 6 miles. Fun & challenging class II rapids along the way including the legendary Thibodeau Falls. For a more convenient section with less whitewater put in at Johnsrud or the Blackfoot River Outpost and paddle 10 miles to the Weigh Station just above Bonner. Fun riffles and a couple of class II features along a friendly section of river.
Clark Fork River Kayaking through Missoula. East Missoula to down town. An easy two hour or less paddle into the heart of Missoula. Best in the morning or evening. Avoid the mid day tubers and festivities by going before 10am.
Bitteroot River Kayaking: Chief Looking Glass to Lolo. 10 miles. Watch out for the log jams and strainers on this section. Incredible birding opportunities. along the way.
